Chapter 20

The Dead Forest

“THEY’RE HOLDING MY brother there.”

I stared long and hard at the barred windows of the two-story, brick building, looming tall in the clearing before us. “Go big or go home, right?”

“You help me get him out of there, and I’ll make sure we leave with that truck.”

I didn’t answer right away. The truck was pivotal to our plan to drive away from the community forever, but so much about freeing the kid’s brother seemed impossible. For one thing, as we hid among the trees, watching people come and go, I noticed at least seven men with various types of weapons. We’d managed to pick up two machetes and a pocketknife, but that wouldn’t do more than slow down an attack before they swarmed and disarmed us.

A quick glance at Peter and I recognized the worried look on his face. He was smart enough to realize what was in front of us and how little our chances of success actually were. No way would this crew fall for another distraction like before, and it was just a matter of time before they realized we were missing from our upstairs prison.

I glanced at the two guards standing in front of a black, wooden door. “Is there any other way inside?”

“There’s a back door. I’ll get the guard’s attention while you two go around to the back.”

Peter spoke up, “Probably locked.”

Snap thrust a ring of keys toward me, and I noticed his white-knuckled grip before taking them. “The silver key will get you in the building. Then, go up the stairs to the room at the end of the hallway. One of the brass keys will get you inside the room.”

“How will we know which one is your brother?”

“He’ll be wearing a red baseball cap. One I gave him right after we escaped the bus. You’ll have to tell him you know that or he’ll never trust you.” He chewed his lip thoughtfully. “Go ahead and release everyone in the room. That will keep the guards busy, and we can escape with the truck then.”

Though curiosity rode me, the bus story and the chaos he predicted afterward would have to wait. “Okay. Ready when you are.” Now I gripped the keys tightly as I pocketed them and steeled myself for this crazy, suicidal mission. We probably wouldn’t make it out of this alive, but if we did, I could just picture Jonas’s face as we pulled up to the gate in the huge transport truck. A humorless grin worked its way onto my lips at the thought. Probably have a heart attack. Keel over and die right there. At least I hoped that’s what would happen.

Without another word, Snap ran about fifty yards through the brush and darted out from the cover of the forest into a small clearing. He waved his arms and shouted at the guards until they looked in his direction.

They didn’t pause for long before they ran after him. Two other guards ran from the back of the house.
